Why Locals Love Alan's Kitchen
Alan's Kitchen, nestled in the heart of Medan Estate on Jl. Boulevard Timur No.8AA, offers an inviting culinary experience that celebrates homey local flavors with a modern touch. This self-service restaurant welcomes diners into a bustling atmosphere where the fresh aroma of Indonesian spices mingles with the lively clatter of plates being filled with an array of colorful dishes.
At Alan’s Kitchen, the dining concept is refreshingly simple yet engaging. Guests select from a vast buffet-style spread of delectable choices, from succulent prawn and tender chicken sticks to an impressive variety of traditional lauk (side dishes). Each dish bursts with vibrant flavors and showcases the freshness and care poured into every preparation. Ella Patricia, one of the patrons, notes the appealing presentation and freshness of the food, emphasizing the clean, appetizing display that immediately whets the appetite. Though the menu is non-halal, the variety ensures there is something enticing for every palate.
The taste is a standout feature here. As Suryani Suryani shares, the food is deliciously satisfying, offering a perfect balance of home-cooked richness and quality. Even Calvin appreciates the wide selection, recognizing Alan's Kitchen as a go-to spot for lunch amidst the bustling Cemara Asri area. The pricing hovers on the slightly higher side compared to other local eateries, but as many agree, including Melissa Dot, the reasonable cost is matched by excellent quality and comforting flavors that keep customers coming back.
Adding to the appeal is the unique self-service approach, which Jovannie Liu describes as “kinda interesting” — take your pick, pay at the cashier, and then savor your meal in a casual, relaxed setting. This style not only makes dining efficient but also allows you to customize your meal exactly to your appetite, enhancing the overall experience.
Whether you're a local or a traveler seeking authentic Indonesian dishes with a homey twist, Alan’s Kitchen provides a memorable dining journey. The combination of vibrant flavors, fresh ingredients, and a friendly atmosphere makes it a worthy destination to refuel and indulge your senses in Medan Estate.

Self service restaurant with huge kind of dish, you take what ever you want to eat and show it to cashier to pay. Taste is delicious but the price is quite expensive according to me. Worth to try!

I visited this place yesterday (Tuesday Night), not crowded and we are probably the only customers. Most of the seafood that we want to order is out of stock. They probably only stock up for busy weekend days and public holiday. I would recommend their sambal belacan and the dark soy with cut chilli. It is the best I tasted so far in town. Food is ok, we ordered cumi Goreng, and I think it is over cooked so slightly rubbery. The Ikan pepes bakar is quite good. The udang goreng mentega is not too bad. I also like how they serve lalap (assorted vegetables) to go with the dishes. Recommended to go during the busy period to avoid disappointment no having what you want. I want to order the Chili crab, but out of stock.
